Tourism, Travel and Event Management students head to Quebec

By Blaine Auld
Second-year student in the Journalism and Communications program

Second-year travel students at 色多多视频APP are taking part in a Quebec event as part of their learning.

Thirty students of the Tourism, Travel and Event Management program will attend the Quebec Winter Carnival in Quebec City for five days, beginning on Feb. 7.

The carnival starts on the same day and finishes on Feb. 16.

Julia Clayton-Clark, learning manager for the tourism and travel stream of the program, said the carnival helps expose the program’s students to winter tourism outside of P.E.I.

“We just thought it would be a really great experience for our students to be able to experience such a large event in the winter time.”

Students will experience activities like making maple taffy, visiting an ice hotel and dog sledding.

There will also be a guided tour of Quebec City and surrounding areas.

“It's going to be a really busy couple of days, but it'll be packed with lots of cultural events and things for the students to experience,” said Clayton-Clark.

There is also work to do in between the fun.

Clayton-Clark will have travel students design a social media post for a cultural activity they enjoyed during the carnival. Event management students have their own tasks.

Everyone will be learning industry skills such as time management, customer service and event planning throughout their trip.

The instructor said the event is a great opportunity, especially for international students of the program who have not experienced winter culture and tourism.

“I'm just excited to be able to see some students experience things for the first time and hopefully take some lessons back.”

Peyton Milligan, a second-year travel student, is also excited.

She traveled to Quebec City in the past.

She is looking forward to dog sledding the most, as well as attending concerts at the event and spending time with her classmates.

Milligan is also eager to see how different groups of workers come together to help at a large event like the carnival.

“It's good to see how the different organizations in tourism do contribute to each aspect in the industry.”

The student added she has enjoyed her time in the program, being able to learn outside of the classroom by directly engaging with local tourism.

“It’s just very enticing and encouraging.”

Clayton-Clark is also excited to go dog sledding.

She has never been to Quebec City before and is happy to experience it for the first time with her students.

“It’s just nice to be able to get off the Island and experience a different culture,” she said.
